About Me
- Erin Haskell
- I have always been passionate about understanding the impact of environment on the way we behave as humans in different spaces. I have come to understand the creation of one's environment need not be based on geographical movement alone. I'm interested in creating spaces that speak to our human emotions. We are constantly evolving, changing and trying to better ourselves. The areas that we live and play in should be no different. I am currently seeking my Master's Degree in Interior Design at Washington State University.

Commercial Design Project - Coast Coffee Co.
Reflection:
I believe the growth and quality of my work is understood by the final commercial project. I spent much more time paying attention to every detail and the quality is leaps and bounds more aesthetically pleasing than my summer work. The strengths from the this project are my rendering abilities, especially with the copper medium as well as representation of materials. My design process involved focusing on the idea of transition as a concept and I used a bicycle wheel as a symbol for the concept. My research included studying other coffee shops to observe the flow of traffic, recycled materials and furniture to coincide with my concept and utilizing my pattern making from my final sketch of the programming process that is is displayed on my copper partitions surrounding the space.
This project inspired me to research third places and observe the traffic flow in certain areas. From there, I was able to decide the best functional furniture floor plan and find creative ways use to my partions in the space. Also, I feel like I have gained more knowledge on finding the best ways to communicate concepts with a client using form givers and finally applying those forms and concepts in the design.

Crane Family Residential Project
The following residential project was designed for a family living in Tempe, AZ. The family consists of 7 year-old Grace, her mom Cynthia who is a teacher and Cynthia's mom Anna who is confined to a wheelchair. This project was designed to meet the requirements set fourth by the client but also adapt the law's of ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) into the home and therefore paying special attention to Anna's room, bathroom, kitchen area and laundry room considering she does the majority of the cooking and cleaning.
The three close-up perspective drawings are my visions for Gracie's room, the kitchen with an accessible garden in the center of the home and a backyard perspective including an outdoor shower/ barbecue area.
Concept: BALANCE. The black sketch drawing, also known as a "parti" is one of the first abstract sketches in the design process. Here i was trying to represent three people growing together as one while trying to find balance in the process. This idea is fully applied in the garden area in the kitchen which balances the public spaces from the private areas in the home.
Reflection:
Studying multiple Arizona homes and researching the adaptation of ADA laws into the home helped my design process as well as practicing multiple sketches and various space planning exercises.I think my knowledge of ADA laws was a great strength to have in adapting those laws into the home designing for a handicapped client. I feel I made the space very accessible.

Final Project "A Place of Our Own" Loft Design
Our final studio project was designing our own loft in Downtown Spokane. Our first assignent was to read the novel "A Place of Our Own" by Michael Polland. From there I chose a quote and constructed a 3-D model and conceptual sketch of the selected quote. Next, I wrote a narrative story intended to tell the audience what my ideal ideal space would consist of and from there I blended all of the elements of my sketch, model and narrative into one design conept. The concept embodied all of the design relationships and elements of Couer d' Alene and lake setting as the basis of my ideas. I also included a material board to help understand my concept.
Photoshop Pattern Making
For this image I started with manipulating 6 different photos to come up with a square. From there I rendered the image three times with markers and colored pencils and mirrored the images for a final pattern. From this assignment, I designed principles in two-dimensions and demonstrated that I understood color theory, hand rendering and digital techniques.
